Your accent shouldn't hold you back

These are the situations that bring most of my clients to accent modification. If any of these resonate, a free conversation is the right next step.

You repeat yourself constantly

People ask "what?" or "sorry?" more than you'd like. It's exhausting and chips away at confidence.

Your accent distracts from your message

You can tell people are working to understand you rather than actually listening to what you're saying.

It's affecting your career

Overlooked for roles, left out of conversations, or receiving feedback about "communication" in reviews.

You avoid speaking in groups

Presentations, meetings, social situations — you hold back because you're self-conscious about how you sound.

What to expect

What accent modification is — and isn't

There's a lot of confusion about what this work actually involves. Here's the honest version.

✓ What it is

  • Improving clarity so your message gets through
  • Working on specific sounds, rhythm, and pacing
  • Building communication confidence and tools
  • A personalised, case-by-case approach

✗ What it isn't

  • Erasing your accent or your identity
  • Making you sound like someone you're not
  • A one-size-fits-all programme
  • A judgement that your accent is a problem

A real example

From hard to follow to genuinely heard

"After a semester working together, his clarity was meaningfully improved — and he had tools to keep building on that in real situations, every day."

A professor at East Stroudsburg University came to me with a specific concern: his students enjoyed his class, but the semester exit surveys consistently noted he was hard to understand. With tenure review approaching, the stakes were real.

He was a non-native English speaker, born in China. His accent wasn't incomprehensible — but certain patterns were making comprehension harder, even for a trained ear. We worked together for one semester. By the end, his accent was still present — and that was entirely the point. What changed was his clarity, his pacing, and his confidence in high-stakes speaking situations.

Your accent is part of who you are. The goal is to make sure it never gets in the way of what you're trying to communicate: it's about being understood.

The work

What we focus on in sessions

Every plan is tailored to you. These are the areas we most commonly work on together.

01

Specific sounds

Targeting the sounds in English that differ from your native language — the ones causing the most miscommunication.

02

Rate and pacing

How fast you speak, where you pause, and how those patterns affect whether listeners can follow you.

03

Volume and projection

Too soft or too loud — both create distance. We calibrate so your voice fills the room without effort.

04

Stress and intonation

English puts emphasis in specific places. Matching those patterns makes a significant difference to how easily you're understood.

05

Communication confidence

Anxiety about how you sound is real. We build self-advocacy tools so you can speak up in any situation.

06

Real-world carryover

What you practice in sessions needs to transfer to the classroom, boardroom, and everyday life. We plan for that from day one.

Common questions

Questions about accent modification

Who is accent modification for?

Anyone learning English as an additional language who wants to communicate more clearly. This includes professionals, academics, executives, teachers, and anyone who relies on their voice at work. You don't need a diagnosable condition — if being understood is affecting your confidence or career, that's enough.

Will I lose my accent completely?

No — and that's not the goal. The work focuses on clarity, not erasure. Your accent is part of your identity. What changes is whether it gets in the way of your message. Many clients finish with their accent intact and their confidence significantly improved.

How long does accent modification take?

It depends on your starting point, your goals, and how consistently you practise between sessions. Some clients notice meaningful change within a few weeks. Others work over several months on deeper patterns. We'll discuss a realistic timeline during your free consultation.

Does telehealth work for accent modification?

Yes — it works very well. This is primarily auditory work. Secure video sessions let us hear each other clearly, review recordings, and work through exercises in real time. Many clients find it more convenient than in-person sessions, with no impact on outcomes.

Is this available outside Florida?

I am licensed to practise in Florida and can work with any Florida resident aged 18 or older via telehealth. If you are outside Florida, I am not able to provide clinical speech therapy services — but you are welcome to join the waitlist and I will be in touch if that changes.

Ready to be truly heard in the way you want to be?

The first conversation is free. Bring your questions, your concerns, and whatever you've been holding back from saying. We'll figure out together whether this is the right fit.
