Frequently Asked Questions
Is online speech therapy as effective as in-person therapy for adults?
For the conditions most adult clients present with — stuttering, accent modification, voice, and many neurological speech concerns — telehealth delivers equivalent outcomes to in-person care. ASHA has recognized telepractice as an appropriate service delivery model for SLPs since 2005. The key variables are the SLP’s competence and the client’s engagement, not the physical setting.
Does my SLP need to be licensed in Florida to treat me online?
Yes. If you are a Florida resident receiving telehealth speech therapy services, your provider must hold a Florida SLP license. Always verify licensure before beginning services. Tatiana Dunnett (Tanya Harmer CCC-SLP) holds a current Florida SLP license.
What is the difference between accent modification and speech therapy for stuttering?
Accent modification is an elective, communication-focused service for adults who want to adjust specific speech patterns for clarity or professional reasons. It is not a disorder treatment. Stuttering therapy addresses a fluency disorder — a speech pattern with neurological roots — using evidence-based approaches including stuttering modification, fluency shaping, and acceptance-based strategies. The same licensed SLP can provide both, but they are distinct services with different goals and methodologies.
How do I know if online speech therapy is right for me?
The free 30-minute consultation is designed to answer that question. If you are an adult in Florida navigating stuttering, an accent you want to modify, voice concerns, a communication challenge following a neurological event, or a caregiver looking for support — that conversation is the right place to start.
Can I do speech therapy if I have mobility limitations or can’t travel?
Yes — this is one of the most significant advantages of telehealth. There is no travel, no clinic navigation, and no physical strain of getting to and from appointments. Sessions happen via secure video in your own environment, on your schedule.
Does Speak for Joy accept insurance?
Speak for Joy is a private pay practice. Sessions are not billed through insurance. Some clients use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost. Fees are listed on the fees page. Tatiana is happy to discuss payment options during the consultation.
What areas of Florida does Speak for Joy serve?
All of Florida. Tatiana is licensed to work with any Florida resident aged 18 or older via telehealth — from Miami to Jacksonville, Tampa to Tallahassee, and every city in between.
